Packing his bags and traveling 7,000 kilometers away from his home of Lismore, Australia, his family and everything he knows to go to the “Pearl of the Andaman,” Phuket, Thailand, Brentin Mumford his pursuing his dream to be a top mixed martial artist.
“My goal in MMA is to fight in the UFC,” said Mumford. “Ever since I started that’s been my dream. Every fight, every good performance is a step in the right direction to my ultimate goal.”
Mumford first came to Tiger Muay Thai in 2013 and has come back repeatedly for his last four fight camps. “ Fight prep here is unreal, no stress, world class training and training partners every day of the week,” said Mumford.
Mumford has amassed a record of 6-2, with five wins in his last six bouts. “I was going into my last fight on a 5 fight winning streak but got disqualified for an illegal strike,” said Mumford. “It was unfortunate as I was clearly winning the fight, but whats done is done and I’ve moved past it and learnt from it.”
Fighting is a full time job, and the dedication that it takes causes some unfortunate circumstances. “The toughest part about coming here to train is definitely leaving my family. Mumford has a seven-year-old son and a eight-week-old daughter.”
In preparation for his dream and to get the best out of himself, Mumford comes to Tiger Muay Thai for months at a time to train and sharpen his craft.
“Every day I work my arse off so all this time away isn’t for nothing,” said Mumford. “I wouldn’t be able to do any of this if I didn’t have such a supportive partner and family.”
Mumford fights in promotions as Roshambo and Nitro In Australia. His next fight is on Nitro12 in Brisbane, Australia October 11, 2014.
“Preparing for my fights with guys UFC talents of Roger Huerta, Brian Ebersole, Mairbek Taisumov, Zubair Tuhugov, Pat Cote and the many other great fighters that come through the camp is awesome,” said Mumford. “Having training partners with their knowledge and skill helping me improves every aspect of my game, everyday I’m learning and growing as an MMA fighter.”
“He’s a tough kid, he dedicates himself to his job and he doesn’t cut any corners,” said Tiger Muay Thai MMA coach, Roger Huerta. “I see a bright future for him.”
The simplicity of life, coaches and training is what keeps bringing Mumford back for more. “I would like to thank Will Elliot for having me at the camp, all the coaches for all the work they put in helping me and all the training partners pushing me day in and day out.”
Mumford credits the high from competing and winning his first fight to what keeps the desire strong for stepping back into the cage or ring. “I fight because I love it,” said Mumford.“I knew then and there that this is what I wanted to do. Now I can’t imagine my life with out martial arts and fighting.”
